Independent music venues are the backbone of any thriving music scene. With many closing their doors for good after being financially crippled by the Covid-19 virus, it’s more important than ever to show up for these businesses that are employing touring musicians and adding undeniable value and culture to towns and cities. With the winter winds whipping around the state we’ve rounded up some of the hottest venues in the area with some phenomenal live music to satiate you.

2/16 - Kennett Flash

Abbie Gardner is a fiery dobro player with an infectious smile. Whether performing solo or with Americana harmony trio Red Molly, her acclaimed tales of love and loss, both gritty and sweet, are propelled by her impeccable lap-style slide guitar playing. Her latest recording. DobroSinger. hit #11 on the Billboard Blues Chart and she’s stopping through Kennett Flash in Kennett Square February 16. 2/17 - The Listening Booth 

Enjoy the off season in the beautiful beach town of Lewes on February 17 with Cliff Hillis and special guest Skribe, the one-man-band. Cliff Hillis is an award winning singer/songwriter based in the Philadelphia area whose music evokes the sunny pop of the 70’s and has garnered national radio airplay. Hillis has co-written with critically acclaimed songwriters such as Rhett Miller, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Kelley Ryan and Dan Bern. 2/17 - Elkton Music Hall

Cherry Park is a Delaware-based indie pop-rock group that’s been gaining traction since their album debut at The Queen in 2023. With songs that explore sonic textures of psych rock, garage rock, and indie pop, there is sure to be something for every music lover within their debut EP, “Secret Garden”, available now! See them perform the album along with special guest Syd Lynrowe at Elkton Music Hall, here.

 

2/24 - Arden Gild Hall

A gem of music venue, Arden Gild Hall in Arden, is known to have world-renowned talent play under the twinkling lights of their auditorium-style concert hall. In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces, or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works, Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Local opener Sharon Sable and E. Shawn Qaissaunee are well known both locally and internationally to be showstoppers with their skillful and sublime vocal and guitar capabilities. 3/1 - The Queen 

Alt-rock band Wheatus has enjoyed a renewed interest, with their songs covered by the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Sza, Jax, Ruston Kelly, and touring with such acts as Dashboard Confessional, Living Colour, Everclear, and many more. Lead singer Brendan B. Brown has taken the success in stride and wants you to join the ride as he tours around the country in an intimate acoustic setting playing the bands well known hits and more. 3/16 - Dover Art League

Enjoy Grammy-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane, presented by Delaware Friends of Folk, at The Dover Art League on March 16. McFarlane strives to bring the lute,­ the most popular instrument of the Renaissance,­ into today’s musical mainstream and make it accessible to a wider audience. Celtic music from Scotland and Ireland combined with Ronn’s original compositions in an exciting reinvention of this historic instrument. Opening the evening is Rick Hudson, a singing, songwriting, folk musician from the Dover area.  Hudson performs in numerous venues and is an accomplished musician, playing guitar, harmonica, autoharp, and clawhammer banjo.
