Music Video Review: "Swing and A Miss" by John Faye and Erin Fox
Erin Fox and John Faye are legends in their own right.
Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Erin Fox has led an inspiring, creative career, fronting rock bands, thriving as a solo artist, and touring the world with The Rock Orchestra, all after overcoming a rare form of brain cancer in 2013. John Faye, a staple of the Delaware music scene and beyond, first gained worldwide recognition as the frontman of The Caulfields with their 1995 hit “Bigger Than Jesus.” During the band’s hiatus, Faye kept moving, launching multiple projects, building a celebrated solo career, hosting a podcast for his Patreon supporters, and becoming a best-selling author with his memoir The Yin and Yang of It All.
Now, the two have joined forces on a hilarious and nostalgic new single, “Swing and a Miss,” complete with a music video to match.
The song and video are a clear, and much appreciated, nod to the classic 1976 film The Bad News Bears. Faye takes the lead as our lovable but uninspiring, beer-drinking, profanity-slinging, and thoroughly unathletic coach. It’s unclear who would actually trust him with a team of kids, but nonetheless, he’s got a ragtag crew of not-so-skilled baseball players ready to hit the field. Erin Fox steps in as the team’s star pitcher and de facto leader, eventually calling out Coach Faye’s bad attitude in the middle of practice. The rest of the team seems unfazed, bumbling their way through dropped fly balls, splintered bats (yes, there’s a surprise bat-breaking moment), and chaotic outfield collisions. Look closely and you’ll spot a roster packed with local music heroes, including members of Roberta Faceplant, Kelsey Cork & The Swigs, Broke Body, plus Jace Miller and Annalise Curtin.
The catchy track and hilarious video were co-written and produced by Erin Fox and John Faye, with the video directed by Joey DiTullio. The song was recorded and mixed by Brett Talley at Brett Sounds in Philadelphia, PA, and mastered by Ron DiSilvestro at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA. Together, this team has delivered a joyful, tongue-in-cheek home run, blending wit, nostalgia, and heart into a perfectly executed ode to creative collaboration.
